The Magpie

The magpie strutted
down the hall
and when I called
took flight
quickly finding
a way out
as if
it'd done this
many times before,
maybe when
I was sleeping.
It brought with it
no fear,
just an implied
understanding
it would be back
tomorrow.

Nature Strip

This morning on my walk
I saw a white gum
shedding bark...

It stood draped
in ragged remnants
like a Weimar cabaret queen,
its promised hints of beauty
 drawing passing walkers in
gripped by its witchery
with every little glimpse
of the beauty it laid bare
inch by teasing inch...

And so it is that I'll be back
tomorrow, the next day
and the next to watch
this woodland cabaret lady
continue to undress.

Christmas Tree

It’s Christmas time yet once again
another year has past
slightly quicker than the last one
which also moved quite fast -

it sometimes leaves me wondering
how many yules are left
to gather up the family
into my little nest -

to decorate the Christmas tree
and sing of jingle bells
of Rudolph with a ruby nose
and Santa and his elves
of a manger and a baby
and a silent holy night
of a star that lit the eastern sky
with incandescent light -

to soak up all the magic
as the mistletoe is hung
as fairy lights twinkle
as  carol singers hum
as the universe listens
to that yuletide seasonal plea -

let the family gather next year
round the Christmas tree with me.
