Past Imperfect

I lie awake
deferring sleep
to rummage
through my mind
for the reasons
and the meanings
in the day
I left behind
the litany
of endless whys
ifs and buts
and maybes
ties my future
to the past
much better left
behind me.

The Magpie

The magpie strutted
down the hall
and when I called
took flight
quickly finding
a way out
as if
it'd done this
many times before,
maybe when
I was sleeping.
It brought with it
no fear,
just an implied
understanding
it would be back
tomorrow.

Nature Strip

This morning on my walk
I saw a white gum
shedding bark...

It stood draped
in ragged remnants
like a Weimar cabaret queen,
its promised hints of beauty
 drawing passing walkers in
gripped by its witchery
with every little glimpse
of the beauty it laid bare
inch by teasing inch...

And so it is that I'll be back
tomorrow, the next day
and the next to watch
this woodland cabaret lady
continue to undress.

Haiku

Sweet summer fruit
heavy in the palm ...
fly-in diners.
